Coming from So Cal a question I get asked quite frequently is if there is any decent Mexican food to be found in Korea. Last year I tried a few options and decided I like Tomatillo’s (locations in Itaewon and Gangnam) the best.
However, I hadn’t yet tried On the Border, having written it off as being super overpriced. On Christmas this year, Josh and I went to On the Border as our Christmas lunch. On the Border is a chain of restaurants in the States, it’s a sit down restaurant similar to El Torito or Don Jose’s with more of a Tex Mex kind of style. When I had looked at the menu last year I was struck by how fajitas were about ₩30,000 (less than $30) which in my opinion is crazy overpriced. However, there are other items on the menu that I found to be similar in pricing to what I’m used to paying at a sit down restaurant in California.
For two people to get two plates of food and a few beers it cost about ₩55,000 (less than $55). For what you get and considering you’re in Korea I found this to be a reasonable price. The meal starts off with the customary chips and salsa, which to me is kind of a big deal.
I ordered a taco plate with a fish taco and a shrimp taco, both tasted great. Only complaint about the food would be that the beans were a little runny, but they still tasted good. Josh ordered a two item combination plate with one enchilada and taquito. We both enjoyed our meals although we probably ordered too much food.
All in all it was a good meal for a reasonable price….decent Mexican food in Korea is not the easiest to come by.
