What had to be the most delicious meal we ate in Jeonju was the dukk kalbi at 교동 족떡이네.
So…what is dukk kalbi? Dukk kalbi is kalbi meat (rib meat) that is ground up and mixed with seasoning, veggies and small pieces of dukk (rice cake). I had reservations on trying this as it didn’t sound like it would be that great but oh, how wrong I was. Prior to eating at this restaurant we had already tried the street food version of the dukk kalbi (click here for the Jeonju street food post) but that does not even begin to compare to the dukk kalbi we had at 교동 족떡이네. From what I saw there are to main forms of the dukk kalbi; small, meatball like balls and hamburger patty shape. We ordered both variations for this meal and they were both delicious.
Starting off with the banchan, there were a couple variations on kimchi but my favorite is always just the regular spicy kimchi. Here at 교동 족떡이네 the kimchi was great…a sign of good things to come. When you order rice at some Korean restaurants it also comes with soup, in this instance it was a cabbage soup and pretty good.
Now…to the best part of the meal!! As with the other small dukk kalbi that we ordered this one came with some creamy sauce on top. The smaller dukk kalbi was my favorite since it tasted just like kalbi (rib meat) with the sweet marinade but had a slightly crunchy exterior. The larger dukk kalbi was a bit softer in texture but still had that delicious kalbi taste. This larger dukk kalbi was Josh’s favorite. I would have to say the larger dukk kalbi tasted like the world’s best meatloaf…it had a slight meatloaf texture but the taste was smoky, sweet and just super tender and juicy.
And now for proof that it was a tasty meal, here is my real time reaction to trying the large dukk kalbi!
I would have to say hands down that every visit to Jeonju should include a meal of the dukk kalbi. I know that bibimbap is famous in this regions but the dukk kalbi was just so good.
