Seoul Stuff…Namsan Tower

On our second day in Seoul Josh and I visited Namsan Tower. In the last 4 months somehow we have managed to see two other famous towers (Space Needle in Seattle and Tokyo Tower in Japan) so because of this I think Namsan Tower was a little bit of a letdown.

To start off with getting to the tower is quite a journey…you can either walk up a mountain or wait in a line to be taken 1/3 of the way up in what I can only imagine is the world’s slowest elevator. Once you are up 1/3 of the way you pay for your tickets to ride the tram up (you can buy 1-way tickets, round trip or just walk the entire way to the base of the tower). Next, you take a tram to the base of the tower.

Once at the base of the tower there are still quite a few steps that lead to a patio where you can see amazing views of Seoul and the many locks along the metal fence protecting you from falling to your death. Apparently, couples come to Namsan Tower and can either bring a lock or purchase one to attach to the gate or a round statue. This is supposed to make the couples’ relationship last forever. I think we were feeling pretty cynical and tired so Josh and I didn’t buy a lock…

Look at this happy couple...definitely don't need a lock to prove the love...right?

The tower itself is reserved for those eating in the restaurant or watching a movie in the theatre in the tower. Not knowing this, we were unprepared for dinner and missed going in the actual tower itself. I think this is the main reason Namsan Tower was such a letdown. At the Space Needle we ate at SkyCity restaurant and enjoyed the 360 degree views and at Tokyo Tower we walked around the entire tower to once again enjoy the views. So, naturally we were disappointed with only getting to the base of Namsan Tower.

I think the tower itself was beautiful at night, and Josh and I are planning a future visit which includes dinner in the actual tower!
